📚 In-Depth Research Profile
Mechanism of Action
Adipotide (FTPP — Fat-Targeted Proapoptotic Peptide) is a peptidomimetic that uses a two-domain design: a targeting sequence (CKGGRAKDC) that homes to prohibitin on adipose vasculature endothelial cells, and a cell-killing sequence (D(KLAKLAK)2) that triggers mitochondrial apoptosis. It destroys the blood supply feeding fat tissue, causing adipose cell death through vascular disruption rather than traditional lipolysis.
Therapeutic Uses
- •Targeted fat reduction: Destroys blood vessels specifically feeding white adipose tissue, causing rapid and significant fat loss in animal models.
- •Obesity research: Provides a fundamentally different approach to fat reduction — vascular targeting rather than metabolic or appetite-based.
Empirical Evidence
Barnhart KF et al. (Sci Transl Med 2011) — Obese rhesus monkeys lost approximately 11% body weight and 39% abdominal fat in just 28 days. Improved insulin resistance and kidney function were also observed. MRI confirmed selective reduction of white adipose tissue.
